Protector S49-I – Pneumatic rail hook for rail tank cars

Pneumatically controlled rail hook for use in LPG loading. TÜV-certified – use in Zone 1 and 2 according to the test report.

OVERVIEW

What is the Protector S49-I?

The Protector S49-I is a pneumatically controlled rail hook for pressurised tank cars. MS Sicherheitstechnik provides it for the specific application area of LPG loading and has been continuously developing it since 1982. It is not a general safety or explosion protection system, but a component specifically designed for this use case.

PRINCIPLE

Function and principle

In normal operation the rail hook holds the bottom valves open via the pull rope (tension rope according to DIN EN 12561-3). The reduction of the control pressure can cause the rail hook to release the pull rope and the bottom valves to close. The actual function depends on the technical design and integration of the respective installation.

Installation situation and rail profile

The Protector S49-I is designed for the S-49 rail profile (DIN 5902 / Profile 49 E 1 according to DIN EN 13674-1) – this is the origin of the product designation. The rail hook is clamped between the tension rope and the rail during filling or emptying and holds the quick-closing bottom valve of the tank car open. If the S-49 profile is not present at the loading station, the rail hook can be hung into a suitable adapter fixture.

The rail hook therefore forms the safety link between tank car and loading station.

SYSTEM INTEGRATION

Integration into quick-shut and emergency stop systems

The Protector S49-I can be integrated into the existing safety system of the loading station.

In case of a malfunction, leakage, activation of the emergency stop system or unintended movement/rolling of the tank car, the safety chain can be triggered so that the quick-closing bottom valves close and the transfer process is secured.

The actual integration – especially into quick-shut systems and emergency stop circuits – depends on the design of the respective installation. For planning questions we are available on request.
